Vol. 227 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prison Conditions in South Africa.

2.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will agree to press in the UN to have a commission set up to investigate conditions in South African jails.

The question of the establishment of a United Nations Commission to investigate prison conditions in South Africa has been dealt with on a number of occasions by the United Nations Special Committee on Apartheid in its reports to the General Assembly.

Much as the great majority of the members of the United Nations, including Ireland, abhor the racial policies of the South African Government, the General Assembly has taken no action on the Special Committee's recommendations that a Commission of investigation be appointed, as in existing circumstances it would not be possible for it to carry out its mandate.
