Vol. 227 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Butt Bridge Traffic Signals.

11.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the fact that many accidents have occurred on the north side of Butt Bridge, Dublin, after the Garda pointsman goes off duty; and if an immediate decision will be made on the suggestion made by the Gardaí for the installation of traffic signals at the particular junction.

I am aware that there have been a number of accidents at this junction. Dublin Corporation propose to provide traffic light signals at the junction of Beresford Place and Custom House Quay as part of a scheme for the provision of an integrated system of traffic light signals for the route Tara Street to Beresford Place. The proposals of the corporation and tenders which they have received for that scheme have been submitted to my Department by the corporation and are under examination by my technical advisers. Careful examination of the corporation proposals is required in view of the complex factors in relation to traffic flows which the installation of a system of this kind entails. A decision will be conveyed to the corporation as expeditiously as possible.

Could the Minister say how long these proposals are in his Department?

Since May, 1966.

Does he not think it about time something was done about it in view of the number of accidents that have occurred at that junction?

The Department's technical officers have recommended that the views of the corporation's traffic manager consultants should be obtained of the impact which the corporation's proposals for these integrated traffic signals will have on traffic movement schemes for routes approaching the city centre.

The Deputy could do a survey from his office.

If I were allowed, I could.
