Vol. 228 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Schools.

51.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the necessity for a central heating system in Barna national school, County Galway; and, if so, when this heating system will be installed.

Mr. O'Malley

My Department has received a report from the Commissioners of Public Works in which they have recommended the installation of an oil-fired central heating system at Barna national school, County Galway. A grant towards the cost of carrying out the scheme will be sanctioned when the local contribution to be provided in the case has been agreed upon. The Department is in communication with the manager in the matter.

I am unable to say at present when work on the installation of the heating system will commence.

52.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the necessity for repairs to Rahoon national school, County Galway; and, if so, when this work will be carried out.

Mr. O'Malley

St. Joseph's national school, Rahoon, is a two-teacher school, which has been recommended for replacement, and I am satisfied that it would be in the best educational interests of the children if they could be catered for in a larger school. I am having investigations made as to how its amalgamation with another school or schools in the parish might be effected.

Pending a final decision in regard to amalgamation, my Department has sanctioned a grant towards the cost of carrying out a small scheme of improvements to keep the school serviceable for a further period.
