Vol. 228 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Improvements Schemes.

39.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Local Government the number of applications awaiting consideration under the rural improvements scheme when the application list closed; and when he proposes to accept further applications.

When the application list was suspended on 9th August, 1965, there were on hands some 1,850 applications for which offers of grant had not been issued.

As I stated in reply to Question No. 32 on 6th April, 1967, I am at present reviewing the arrangements for the future administration of these grants. When this review is completed, a decision regarding the acceptance of new applications will be made.

(Cavan): Is it a fact that the Minister's Department has sent out a circular letter in reply to applicants stating that he is not accepting further applications during the current year, or that sufficient applications are in hands to occupy his Department for the current year?

As I said, the question of the final arrangements for these grants is at present under review. Until that review has been completed, a decision with regard to the acceptance of any applications cannot be made but it will be made very shortly.

(Cavan): Might I take it that the circular that has been sent out saying that no further applications will be entertained during this current year is inaccurate?

I have not got the circular before me and I do not necessarily accept that this is the proper interpretation of it.

(Cavan): Would the Minister be good enough to look into the circular?

Yes, if the Deputy will tell me to which circular he is referring.

(Cavan): The circular seems to be in the form of a letter sent out to people who make application for work under this scheme and it says that there are enough applications on hand to keep the Minister busy for the current year.

As the Deputy knows, applications have not been accepted for some time. A decision with regard to the acceptance of new applications cannot be made until the review has been completed.

(Cavan): Would the Minister agree that this scheme is of the utmost importance to people in rural Ireland who find it absolutely necessary in order to gain access to their homesteads?

I agree.

(Cavan): And will the Minister treat it as such?
