Vol. 228 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ireland-France Car Ferry Service.

2.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if, in view of the redundancy created at Rosslare harbour by the decision of CIE and British Railways to transfer container traffic to Waterford, he will consider making Rosslare harbour the terminal point for the proposed car ferry service between Le Havre and Ireland.

As I indicated in reply to a previous question on 18th April, 1967, the choice of a terminal port in this country for a car ferry service from the Continent, would be a matter for the shipping company concerned.

Car ferry traffic through Rosslare has been growing and this year there will be an increase of 30 per cent in capacity for cars on the Fishguard-Rosslare route.

The routing of container traffic is a matter entirely for British Rail but I am not aware that any redundancy is expected to arise on this account though there may be some reduction in the demand for casual workers during the summer.
