Vol. 229 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Garda Station Death.

20.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Justice if he is yet in a position to make a statement on the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Liam O'Mahony of O'Connell Avenue, Turners Cross, Cork on 30th May, 1967 in the Bridewell Garda station, Cork.

I am not in a position to make any statement as yet in the matter beyond saying—what is common knowledge—that the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, has directed that a most searching inquiry be made into all the circumstances surrounding the death.

I understand that the Corner has decided to hold an inquest, with a jury, on June 15th.

Mr. Barrett

I wonder could the Minister explain why there has been such a long delay between the date of death and the date on which the inquest will be held?

Precisely because of what has already been stated by the Garda Commissioner and my own interest in the matter, that the most searching inquiries possible be made as a preliminary to the actual inquest, so that the full matter may be unfolded properly, a proper inquiry held and a decision made as to the cause of death.

Mr. Barrett

Will the Minister be ready to make a statement if I repeat the question after the inquest has been held?

Indeed I will, yes.
