Vol. 229 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Assistance Payments.

27.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Social Welfare the weekly rates of unemployment assistance payable to smallholders in specified areas in the following categories at present: (a) a single man with a poor law valuation of £4, (b) a married man without a child dependant with a poor law valuation of £8, (c) a married man with one child dependant and a poor law valuation of £9, (d) a married man with two child dependants and a poor law valuation of £10, (e) a married man with four child dependants and a poor law valuation of £12, and (f) a married man with seven child dependants and a poor law valuation of £14.

As is apparent from the detailed table of rates shown in my Department's free explanatory leaflet U.A. 19 (S.F.), the categories of applicants mentioned in the question are persons whose conjugal position and land-valuation are such as to place them on the outer fringe of eligibility under the amended scheme of unemployment assistance for smallholders in specified areas of congestion. Assuming that there are no means other than from land, the weekly rates of unemployment assistance at present payable in these purely marginal cases are respectively 2/-, 2/6d, 4/6d, 7/6d, 1/6d and 1/6d. By reason of the increases announced in the Budget, these rates will be raised from the beginning of August next by 5/- for a single person and 10/- for a married person.
