Vol. 229 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pensions of County Council Workers.

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government if permanent county council workers under the Local Government (Superannuation) Acts, who were temporarily deployed from their normal county council work in a supervisory capacity on schemes carried out by the Special Employment Schemes Office, will have this period of employment credited to them for pension purposes.

The provisions of the Local Government (Superannuation) Act, 1956, allow a pensionable employee of a local authority to reckon as service the periods mentioned by the Deputy.

Would the Minister consider it a good idea if local authorities were informed that they should keep a record of such service in their books because there is extreme difficulty in getting them to accept that section of the Act?

I have no knowledge that that situation exists. I do not believe it does.

If the Minister knew what was happening in his Department, he would know that every day there are appeals being made to him because of that. Naturally he would not know what is happening in his Department.

I do know, and I do not believe one solitary word of what the Deputy said. It is just another gimmick of the Labour Party.
