Vol. 230 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Jail Sentence on Deaf Mute.

11.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will indicate the special treatment given in the case of a person (name supplied) in County Mayo, described as a deaf mute, who was given a jail sentence in Ballina Court.

The serving of the prison sentence does not present any special difficulties for the prison or the prison administration as he is in good health, is intelligent and is able to communicate freely in writing.

On a humanitarian basis he is being allowed to serve his sentence in the hospital ward of the prison.

I understood from the reading of the sentence that special treatment was to be given him by virtue of his condition; is there any special treatment?

That is why he is in the hospital ward, precisely why he is there.
