Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Cargo and Tanker Tonnage.

1.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the total amount of Ireland's cargo shipping tonnage; if any of the fleet is at present on charter; and, if so, where.

The total tonnage of cargo shipping on the Irish Register is 126,565 tons gross.

Irish shipowners are not required to furnish particulars of their vessels which may be on charter. I can say, however, that ten vessels of the Irish Shipping Ltd. fleet are on time charter for periods varying from five to 19 months and three of the company's vessels are on single voyage charter. All are engaged in deep sea traffic throughout the world.

2.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the present tanker tonnage of the Irish fleet; and where the vessels are operating.

The total tonnage of tankers on the Irish Register is 2,797 tons gross. All the vessels operate in the Irish coastal and cross-Channel trade.
