Vol. 230 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pensioners.

15.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is satisfied that the present social welfare code adequately covers the position of old age pensioners living alone; and whether after recent disclosures in Limerick his Department will consider making an examination of this problem.

As has already been announced, an interdepartmental committee under the aegis of the Minister for Health is examining the question of the care of the aged and to what extent better provision might be made for them. I will of course consider sympathetically any recommendations which the committee may make and which may require action by my Department.

Can the Minister gives us any information when this committee will furnish any findings?

I was making inquiries recently about that. They have been around quite a bit. They have visited many places and I understand they will be visiting Scotland very soon. I expect they have come almost to the end of their investigations.

The Minister is aware we are now approaching the winter season and those about whom we are worried will suffer most in the intensely cold weather. My hope is that the committee will give up their journeys abroad and make some recommendations in this matter.
