Vol. 230 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Driving Tests.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government if consideration is being given to allowing driving tests to be conducted with automatically controlled vehicles; and if non-nationals are already being allowed this facility.

If and when section 20 of the Road Traffic Bill, 1966, is enacted consideration will be given to conducting driving tests on vehicles having automatic transmission. The existing Regulations applying to driving tests provide that the vehicle to be provided by an applicant for the purpose of a test shall, inter alia, be of a type sufficiently representative of its class. Vehicles having automatic transmission are not regarded as complying with this provision which applies equally to all applicants for tests, irrespective of their nationality.
