Vol. 230 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundancy in Textile Industry.

54.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if there is redundancy in the textile trade at present; and what action he proposes to take to restore full employment in the industry.

While redundancy in the textile industry in this country is not general, it has been brought to my attention that there is some unemployment in the industry. The reasons for laying off workers in the cases in question are depressed export markets particularly in Great Britain.

It is hoped that the unemployment may only be temporary; I have the situation under constant consideration with a view to taking any remedial action which may be open to me.

Could the Minister say is the position in Britain easing off anything which will reflect on employment here?

As the Deputy knows, in this particular industry, the situation in Britain is extremely difficult. The indications are that in a couple of months perhaps, the worst of the difficulties will have been overcome, but it will be at least a couple of months before that can be said to have happened.
