Vol. 231 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour Production in EEC Countries.

14.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if his attention has been drawn to a report regarding the cutting down of flour production by the countries of the EEC; whether a meeting of the International Millers Association was held recently in Paris to study the effects of the implementation of a unified wheat and flour market by the EEC; what effects such a policy will have on wheat growing and flour milling in this country; if the income of farmers and employment in the flour milling industry will be adversely affected; and if he will make a statement on this matter.

I understand that a meeting of the International Millers Association was held in Paris recently, the purpose of which was to study the effect on the European Flour Milling Industries of the implementation of the arrangements for a unified wheat and flour market in the EEC countries and the implications of proposals which have been made for rationalisation of flour milling in these countries. I have no reason to fear the effects of the EEC policy in relation to wheat and flour production in Ireland.

Does the Minister not consider it desirable that he should obtain a full report on this important meeting so that he may be kept informed of what is going on?

The Deputy can be assured we will have the fullest report available on this and it will be studied.
