Vol. 231 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Unemployed.

32.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware of the growing numbers of unemployed in Mayo, particularly in Ballina; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy this situation.

The latest date for which particulars are available of unemployed registered at local offices in County Mayo is 1st December, 1967. The total registered unemployed on that date was 3,730 as compared with 3,666 on the corresponding date last year. The number of those who are registered at Ballina is 1,041 as compared with 974 last year.

As stated in my reply to a similar question from the Deputy on 20th July last the task of the Employment Service of my Department is to place persons in touch with jobs that are notified to the employment exchanges.

May I ask the Minister if he is not startled by the figure for the town of Ballina or is he taking it as ordinary routine?

Question No. 33.
