Vol. 231 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Safety.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received from the Irish Transport and General Workers Union the text of a motion adopted by the union's annual conference on road deaths and road safety; and what action he proposes to take on the matters mentioned in the motion.

I have received a copy of the motion to which the Deputy refers. An intensive road safety educational programme has been pursued by my Department over the past few years, with the assistance of local authorities and voluntary bodies. Indeed as the Deputy is probably aware, a further drive is being conducted in the present month and I can assure him that further projects in this field are planned and will be implemented.

As regards the physical aspect of road safety, the improvement of our road system is constantly receiving attention.

On the question of enforcement I might mention that the penalties prescribed for serious traffic offences under road traffic law are a clear indication to the courts of the gravity with which such offences are viewed.

Would the Minister consider a more frequent use of RTE in the campaign?

I think RTE is utilised fairly extensively.

I do not think it is.
