Vol. 231 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cutting of Roadside Hedges.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has authorised local authorities to purchase machines for the cutting of hedges on the sides of roads; and if he will direct local authorities to cut these hedges, so as to relieve those at present responsible of the necessity of doing so.

Road authorities have statutory powers to purchase such machines and do not require specific authority to purchase them except where it is proposed to finance the purchase by borrowing.

I could not undertake to issue a directive on the lines envisaged by the Deputy which could result in infringement of the rights of private property owners. The existing powers available to road authorities for dealing with the cutting and trimming of hedges are adequate for the discharge of their responsibilities and for the protection of road users.
