Vol. 231 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Married Quarters.

31.

asked the Minister for Defence whether married quarters for army personnel are adequate at present; whether there is a waiting list for such accommodation; and whether any review of the suitability of such accommodation is carried out periodically.

The answer to the first part is no and to the second and third parts is yes.

I should point out, however, that the provision of houses for soldiers is primarily a matter for local authorities and a soldier has an equal claim on local authority houses with any member of the community in the same income group. The policy of my Department is to supplement the efforts of local authorities where the need is greatest and schemes totalling 170 houses have already been completed.
