Vol. 232 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Taxation System.

39.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is satisfied that the present system of local taxation can effectively and equably deal with expenditure expected of it.

The present investigations by an interdepartmental committee into the entire system of local finances and taxation are designed to identify the aspects of the system which may require to be revised and to provide a basis for the formulation of comprehensive proposals for any such revision.

Some important aspects of local finance, including the effectiveness of the valuation system as a basis for rating, and the effects of rating exemptions and remissions on local taxation, have been examined in the first two reports of the interdepartmental committee. As the Deputy is aware, I have published the views of the committee in order to bring about a better understanding of how the system works and to evoke constructive comment. A third report will, I hope, be made available to the public at an early date.
