asked the Minister for Local Government if for the purpose of having the information conveniently together in one document for purposes of comparison for each financial year since 1948-49 he will state (a) the number of (i) houses and (ii) flats and the total dwellings provided; (b) the amount of capital expenditure on (a); (c) the amount provided for small dwelling loans; and (d) the total of (b) and (c).

NOTES
(1) The figures in column (2) comprise both private and local authority dwellings. They include an estimated 350-400 dwellings provided annually without the aid of grants or by conversion of existing dwellings. Separate figures for flats are not available.
(2) The figures in column (3) represent total capital investment in the building, substantial improvement and reconstruction of dwellings, excluding site acquisition costs. Separate figures for investment in new dwelling are not available; such investment would comprise new-house loans made by building societies, assurance companies and local authorities, new-house grants and moneys raised by way of bank accommodation and by personal savings and deposits, etc.
(3) The figures in column (4) for house-purchase loans by local authorities include small amounts for the purchase of previously-occupied houses.
(4) The figures in column (6) comprise capital expenditure by the State on housing grants and by local authorities on their own housing and on house-purchase and reconstruction loans and supplementary grants. For the years 1963/64 to 1967/68 inclusive, capital expenditure on housing—of about £1.0 million to £1.5 million a year—by the National Building Agency, Roinn na Gaeltachta and the Shannon Free Airport Development Company Ltd. is also included.
