Vol. 232 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salmon Disease.

34.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if salmon disease is still prevalent; and, if so, where.

The disease known as Ulcerative Dermal Necrosis (UDN) continues, in varying degree, to affect salmon in certain Irish rivers. The rivers shown as affected to any significant extent in the most recent reports by boards of fishery conservators were the Suir, Nore, Blackwater, Lee, Bandon, Cummeragh, Maine and Brown Flesk, Shannon, Feale, Bunree, Easkey and Abbey. It will be appreciated that the period covered by these reports includes the spawning season when the apparent incidence of disease can be exaggerated by fungal growths, which are of frequent occurrence at spawning time.
