Vol. 232 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Commission Gangers.

23.

asked the Minister for Lands why his Department have not, despite repeated requests, met representatives of the trade union representing Land Commission gangers.

The matters raised in the trade union request, which was received early in January, are being investigated and it is hoped to arrange an early meeting.

Is the Minister not aware that the request which he has referred to as having been received early in January is a repeat request, following at least three made in 1967? Does he not think it is a little odd that the Government which should be preaching good labour relations should fail so badly to carry out their own request?

I disagree with the allegations of the Deputy about when this request was made. At all events, the matter, as I say, is under investigation and there will be a meeting with the union in the very near future.

Will the Minister agree with the allegations I have made if I supply him with copies of the letters sent to his Department?

It appears to me that there was some confusion about this correspondence. There are two different versions of it, one from the Deputy and the other from my officials.

Surely, copies of my letters would remove all confusion from the Minister's mind?

Not necessarily. I am prepared to examine any side of the case.
