Vol. 232 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of 1959 Referendum.

40.

asked the Minister for Finance the total cost of the Referendum of 1959.

As the poll at the 1959 Referendum was taken on the same day as the Presidential Election of that year, it is not practicable to make an exact apportionment of costs. The total cost to the State of both was £81,300. It is estimated that had a referendum only been held the cost would have been in the region of £60,000.

Why would there have been that difference?

The difference is in the result.

It is very difficult to make an estimate in this matter. That is the best we can make.
