Vol. 232 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pay Rates Disparity.

8.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware that Irish skilled tradesmen engaged upon work by a firm (name supplied) are being paid less than half the hourly rate applied in respect of non-Irish workers in the same factory who are engaged upon exactly similar work; if he will take steps to have the rate paid to Irishmen adjusted accordingly; and why this heavily subsidised firm is not required to recruit an Irish staff of skilled workers.

I have no detailed information about the rates paid by this firm to their workers. I understand that the bulk of the regular staff of this firm are Irish. I am informed that they have supplemented their regular staff by obtaining workers for a limited period from a firm which supplies skilled workers on a sub-contract basis.

I appreciate that the Minister for Labour is unable to be present today. With the permission of the Chair, I shall take up this matter with him next week.
