Vol. 232 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pension Means Test.

11.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will abolish the means test for old age pensioners.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a similar question on 11th May last.

Would the Minister explain why not?

I think my views on the means test for old age pensions are fairly well known. I have frequently said that if we had the necessary million which would be required to abolish means tests, I would prefer to give it to the more necessitous cases.

Does the Minister not appreciate that this would mean relief to many necessitous cases and would be money well spent rather than what you are attempting to do now?
