Vol. 233 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork City Public Service Vehicles.

14.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give details of the number of public service vehicles, under their different headings, which are operating in Cork city; and if he has made, or intends to make, regulations limiting the number of public service vehicle licences in the city.

I understand that licences are current at present for the following numbers of vehicles for the Cork taximeter area, namely:—

Licensed public hire vehicles (commonly known as "taxis"), 85;

Licensed private hire vehicles (commonly known as "hackneys"), 86;

Large public service vehicles, 18.

I understand that in addition Córas Iompair Éireann operate 60 large public service vehicles in the area.

With regard to the second part of the question I presume the Deputy has in mind small public service vehicles only and with regard to these I have no power to limit their numbers. I do not intend to seek such powers but I am at present considering the adoption of measures which will provide for stricter control over such vehicles and their drivers.
