Vol. 233 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Uniforms.

33.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the exact position in relation to the wearing of school uniforms by national school students; whether he considers that the rules concerning the wearing of uniforms should be introduced without consultation with parents; and if he is aware that in at least one case a commercial firm has measured schoolgirls for blazers and that children have been told that, while there is no obligation upon their parents to purchase such uniforms, the lack of one will be remarked upon and the child regarded as an odd man out.

There is no regulation in the Code of Rules for National Schools regarding the wearing of school uniforms by pupils of these schools. There could of course be no question of the wearing of uniforms being made compulsory or the pupils being discriminated against for not wearing them. I have no official information relating to the specific case mentioned by the Deputy, but I am having the matter investigated by my Department.
