Vol. 233 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Wagon Springs.

34.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that wagon springs of a type heretofore made at CIE works, Inchicore, Dublin, are now being imported; and that it is believed that Craven coaches of a type now being manufactured here are to be imported in the future; and if, in view of the grave probability of loss of employment by workers as a result of this action by CIE, he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware that wagon springs are being imported by CIE. My information is that the springs required are still being manufactured in this country.

I am informed by CIE that they are considering importing railway coaches because of labour difficulties in manufacturing at their own works. I have been told that these difficulties have not been resolved in prolonged discussions with the trade unions concerned. I think that the position could with advantage be examined by the Department of Labour and I am arranging to have this done.

Has the Minister any information as to the possibility of wagon springs being imported in the future?

No. No order has been placed for these springs outside the country. I have no knowledge of any intention.
