Vol. 233 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - American Air Tourists.

4.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether there are any special arrangements for welcoming American tourists at Shannon and Dublin airports; and the nature of these arrangements.

Tourist information offices are operated at Shannon and Dublin Airports for all visitors. The office at Shannon Airport is operated jointly by the Mid-Western Regional Tourism Organisation and the Sales and Catering Service at the Airport. The office at Dublin Airport is operated by the Eastern Regional Tourism Organisation.

These offices form part of the network of tourist information offices provided by the regional tourism organisations at 100 centres throughout the country. The service is available to all visitors irrespective of their country of origin.

Is the Minister aware that felt leprechauns have been presented to American tourists at Dublin Airport as part of a typical Irish welcome to this country? Has the Minister heard that this may involve more arrangements and does he approve of this?

The role of the leprechaun in tourist propaganda is reasonably restricted.

We should endeavour to get away from the idea of trying to be Ruritanian in our tourist appeal. We should try to get away from the concept of a leprechaun Ireland. Honorary citizenship can be conferred on American tourists arriving at the airports. Perhaps the Minister will look into this?

The standard of tourist souvenirs offered here is improving constantly, as the Deputy knows. If he goes into a hotel, he will find it has been immensely improved, although I think it is capable of further improvement.
