Vol. 233 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Higher Education Courses.

2.

andMrs. Burke asked the Minister for Education whether, in view of the uncertainty in the matter, he will make a comprehensive statement to clarify the position which will exist in future regarding post-primary, secondary and university scholarships for which local authorities and the State provide the necessary funds.

3.

asked the Minister for Education whether it is proposed to introduce free university education; and whether the present scholarships will be expanded.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 2 and 3 together.

As previously announced in this House by way of reply to a question from Deputy Boylan on 15th February, I intend to introduce legislation into Dáil Éireann during the present session to make provision for the award of students' grants to enable the holders of such grants to attend courses of higher education. In view of the impending legislation, it would not be appropriate for me to enlarge upon the proposals at this stage.

Because of the introduction of the scheme of free post-primary education, it is not intended to hold any further competitions for scholarships to post-primary schools.

All scholarships held under existing enactments will run their normal course.
