Vol. 233 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Basic Unemployment and Pension Rate.

51.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if any survey has been conducted by his Department, or if he is aware of any survey conducted by any other body, to ascertain how far 57/6d, the current basic unemployment and pension rate, will go towards meeting the cost of rent, light, heating, clothing and food of a person for one week.

I am not aware of any survey having being carried out for the specific purpose referred to in the question.

The Minister will agree that the amount allowed is very small, often smaller than that given under the Agricultural Wages Board rate for farm workers.

In connection with any very small amount, one would always justify an increase.

Say that to the Minister for Finance.

I have always said it.
