Vol. 234 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Coast Landing Facilities.

22.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the urgent necessity of providing the fishermen in the west of Ireland with (a) proper slipways for landings and (b) winches for bringing boats ashore in the event of sudden storm; and what steps he proposes to take to provide these facilities.

My Department, in collaboration with Roinn na Gaeltachta and the Office of Public Works, are taking all reasonable measures to provide adequate landing facilities, including slipways and winches, to meet present and expected needs of the fishing industry. Survey Teams have been set up to make up-to-date appraisals of these requirements on the West coast and the survey of the Galway coast is now in progress.

Can the Minister indicate when we will have any information on these surveys?

As soon as they report to me.

Can the Minister say when the surveys will be made?

The surveyors are already making a survey and they will make the report.

There is no use in sidestepping.

I am not sidestepping. If the Deputy wants information, he should ask a question and I will give the answer.

It is all involved in the question and should be covered in a full reply.

If the Deputy does not tell me what he has in mind, I cannot know. I am not a mind reader.
