Vol. 235 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speeding Fines.

30.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons convicted of overspeeding since the introduction of speed limits; and the amount of fines imposed.

The information is not available from the statistics already compiled and its value would not, in my opinion, justify the research that would have to be undertaken to compile it.

The following information, however, may be of interest in this connection:

In the years ended 30th September, 1966 and 30th September, 1967, the number of persons convicted of the offence of exceeding a speed limit were 11,125 and 12,691 respectively. Figures of convictions are not available for earlier years but the total number of prosecutions for breaches of the speed-limits since the introduction of the built-up area speed limit on 1st April, 1963, to 30th April, 1968, was 76,044.
