Vol. 235 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Debt.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance the amounts of the national debt held by (a) individuals, (b) State agencies and companies, (c) commercial banks, (d) the Central Bank of Ireland, (e) insurance companies, (f) building societies and (g) persons from outside the State, in the last financial year; and the amounts paid in interest to each.

The total of Government bills and investments held by the commercial banks on 31st March, 1968, was £100 million approximately. Apart from this the composition of the holdings of investments is not known and it is therefore not possible to compute the amount paid in interest.

Under the present manual system of registration, a classification of holdings into the categories mentioned by the Deputy would entail a lengthy ad hoc analysis of the registers of all outstanding National Loans. When a computerised system is introduced, significant classifications will be readily available.

25.

asked the Minister for Finance (a) the cost of service of public debt and (b) the amount of public debt outstanding during the financial years from 1963-64 to 1967-68 inclusive; and if he will give (a) as a percentage of (b) in each of these years.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.
