Vol. 235 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salaries of Teachers.

36.

asked the Minister for Education the number of secondary schools which are paying teachers (a) the minimum school salary laid down by the Department and (b) above the said minimum; and the number of teachers in each category.

The Department's regulations prescribe that a minimum number of teachers must be employed in each secondary school and that these must be paid the minimum school salary.

Five schools have indicated that they are paying the minimum salary and 539 schools are shown as paying above the minimum, 44 schools staffed entirely by religious are not included. Some of the 5 schools shown as paying the minimum may in fact be paying more.

Thirty-five lay teachers are shown as receiving the minimum, 2,156 lay teachers are shown as receiving above the minimum, and the position is not shown in relation to the remaining 385 lay teachers as schools are not required to provide this information for teachers in excess of the minimum quota. The question of school salary does not arise for members of religious communities.

37.

asked the Minister for Education whether under the proposed new secondary teachers' salaries structure there will be any prohibition against schools passing on the £150 science grant to qualified teachers.

38.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state, with reference to the estimate of £3,500,000 as the cost of implementing the proposed new schemes for teachers' salaries, if that figure takes into account the amount now spent in capitation grants; whether there will be any alteration in capitation grants; and, if so, the nature and extent of same.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 37 and 38 together. As stated in reply to a question on this subject on 30 May, 1968, I am not in a position to make any statement in relation to the Report of the Tribunal on Teacher's Salaries pending its consideration by the Government.
