Vol. 235 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Meals.

35.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is prepared to extend the provisions of the Education (Provision of Meals) Act to cover the urban areas of County Dublin.

Under the Acts mentioned, urban district councils, county borough councils and town commissioners are empowered to arrange for the provision of meals for school children attending national schools in their areas. I have no authority to extend the Acts to other areas.

Is the Minister aware that this scheme cannot be operated in certain large urban areas in County Dublin because of the overlapping of the county with the city and the city with the county? There is the anomalous position that these facilities are available to the people in the city, but those who have moved out from the city cannot get them, even though they are still under the corporation. It does not make sense.

It is a matter over which I have no control at the moment.

Will the Minister look into it?
