Vol. 237 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Turf Distribution.

55.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when a depot will be opened for the distribution of turf to old age pensioners and widows in the Inchicore, Kilmainham and Bluebell districts of Dublin, as many old people are unable to go to Ballyfermot for this free issue.

I am informed by the Dublin Health Authority that the recent demolition by Dublin Corporation of Keogh Barracks, Inchicore, for re-development purposes involved the closure of the fuel depot which had been available there in previous winters. The corporation hope to provide another depot speedily at Keogh Square. In the meantime applicants who normally used the Keogh Square depot are being directed to the Lally Road depot and the health authority will extend its usual delivery facilities for aged persons to other cases of hardship.

Is the Minister aware that the Lally Road depot is considerably farther away, and will he make some other arrangements for the convenience of the people concerned? Will he also indicate how long it will take the corporation to make the necessary arrangements?

This alternative depot is only a temporary arrangement. It is hoped to provide the other depot as soon as possible.

Would it be a month? Is the Minister aware that the Lally Road depot is the better part of two miles uphill and is certainly not a fit location for the people who have to go there?

There are delivery facilities for certain people.
