Vol. 237 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Bridge.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that great hardship and inconvenience is being experienced by residents in the area, owing to the fact that traffic cannot travel over the bridge at Muckinagh, Parke, Castlebar, County Mayo; and if he will take immediate steps to remedy this problem.

Work on the building of a new bridge at Muckinagh is in progress and will be finished as quickly as possible. It is hoped that the bridge can be opened early in the new year.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that when recent flooding occurred the bridge was submerged despite the activities of the Office of Public Works on the Moy drainage scheme?

I am so aware. I am also aware that, in that particular part of the country, there were four inches of rainfall in 40 hours, a most exceptionally high level of rainfall in that area, and it is only natural to expect that there would be flooding as a result of rainfall of that intensity.
