Vol. 237 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Treatment of Alcoholics.

176.

asked the Minister for Health the number of alcoholics in Ireland and the centres at which treatment for this condition is available.

There are no figures available as to the total number of alcoholics. In the year 1966 (which is the most recent year for which full information is available) there were 1,757 admissions to psychiatric hospitals for treatment for alcoholism.

Some treatment for alcoholism is provided in general hospitals and private nursing homes, but, in general, alcoholism is treated in the psychiatric hospitals.
