Vol. 237 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clonmel Post Office.

27.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in carrying out alterations and improvements at Clonmel post office, County Tipperary; and when the proposed automatic telephone exchange will be installed.

There has been no avoidable delay in having the improvement works at Clonmel post office carried out or the telephone exchange building erected.

As mentioned in reply to a previous question by the Deputy in December last, special measures are being taken by the Commissioners of Public Works to have the scheme as a whole completed as quickly as possible. It is expected that tenders for the erection of the new exchange building will be invited within a month.

The work of enlarging the public office, sorting office and clerical accommodation cannot be undertaken until the telephone exchange work has been removed to the new building.

Tenders for the automatic exchange equipment will be invited shortly but it would be premature at this stage to forecast when the exchange will be converted to automatic working.

The workers do not have to use buckets when it rains, like the workers in Cavan?

I do not think so. We have a pretty liberal supply of water there.

Have you been taking some of the Cavan surplus water down there?
