Vol. 238 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Croghan (Roscommon) Telephone Kiosk.

9.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that owing to the closure of the Garda station at Croghan, County Roscommon, a public telephone kiosk is urgently required in the village; and what steps he proposes to take to provide one there.

10.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is prepared to have a public telephone kiosk provided at Croghan village, County Roscommon, in view of the impending closure of the Garda station there.

I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 9 and 10 together.

There is a public telephone in Croghan post office and provision of a kiosk is not warranted.

The people who want to make a phone call have now to go into the post office. Heretofore, they could use the Garda barracks, but this is now closed. Surely a kiosk would be essential for people wishing to make phone calls late at night?

I do not see why they had to go to the Garda barracks to make a phone call when that facility was available in the post office in Croghan from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and I doubt if the facilities in the Garda station would make provision for any longer extension than that.

They could do it.

In the same way as the post office could do it in an emergency.

11.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider making arrangements for a 24hour telephone service to be made available for the village of Creeslough, County Donegal.

The introduction of 24-hour service at Creeslough Exchange is not warranted at present. A number of subscribers have continuous service by means of switching to a continuous service exchange when Creeslough is closed and several more could be similarly accommodated.
