Vol. 238 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Oil Pollution.

11.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what provisions have been made to deal with pollution in the event of an oil spillage in the Port of Dublin.

The Dublin Port & Docks Board have in force bye-laws regulating the discharging, loading, handling, storage and distribution of petroleum at the Port of Dublin. In addition, the Oil Pollution of the Sea Act, 1956, makes it an offence to discharge oil, either from a vessel or from land, into the port.

The board have special emergency arrangements to deal with oil spillages. These arrangements include a 500 feet floating oil boom and the use of chemicals to treat the oil. The board intend to provide a second larger boom in the near future.
