Vol. 238 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Killarney Educational Facilities.

41.

asked the Minister for Education what proposals are under consideration in his Department in order to streamline educational facilities in Killarney and in particular the proposals for primary and secondary school education in the Presentation Convent, Mercy Convent, Loreto Convent and Presentation Monastery schools there; and the present position in relation to the proposed new primary school at the Mercy Convent and the extension and improvement of secondary school facilities at the Presentation Convent.

It has been agreed that the Mercy Convent will concentrate on primary education and that the Presentation Convent will concentrate on secondary education, these arrangements to come into effect as soon as the new Convent of Mercy primary school is built. A suitable site has been secured and the schedule of accommodation is being worked out. The question of what additional accommodation will be required in the Presentation Convent is at present under consideration. The Mercy Sisters who are qualified on the secondary side will then teach in the Presentation Convent and similarly the Presentation Sisters who are qualified on the primary side will teach in the Mercy Convent. My Department is carrying out a survey of the primary school facilities south of the town; in the meantime repairs have been carried out to the primary school attached to the Loreto Convent to render it suitable for school purposes. The Presentation Monastery school will continue to provide for the primary education of the boys in the town.
