Vol. 238 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Money Market.

37.

asked the Minister for Finance what progress has been made towards the development of a suitable money and bond market in Ireland; and if it is proposed that such a market through repatriation of present external investments will provide substantial additional sums for investment in Ireland.

In June, 1967 a committee was appointed by the Governor of the Central Bank to consider and report on the functions that might be performed by an active money market in Ireland, the methods of operation of such a market and the practical steps that might be taken to facilitate such a development. I understand that this committee has recently reported. Until the findings of the committee have been fully considered, it is not possible for me to say to what extent any arrangements made could be expected to lead to a repatriation of external investment.
