Vol. 238 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Public Health Nurses.

78.

asked the Minister for Health if he will appoint public health nurses in every dispensary district in County Galway.

The appointment of Public Health Nurses is a matter for the Health Authority. My function is limited to approving the creation of posts of public health nurse.

It has been suggested to health authorities that, as a general policy, they should aim at providing one nurse for each 4,000 of their population rather than providing a nurse in each dispensary district. A recent review of the service, undertaken in conjunction with County Medical Officers, showed that this policy was in general proving satisfactory. The number of posts of public health nurse approved for Galway Health Authority area is somewhat better than the recommended ratio.
