asked the Minister for Education if he will give comparative figures for the average annual running costs of (a) comprehensive schools, (b) secondary schools, (c) vocational schools and (d) national schools; and if he can give details of the number of pupils at present attending each type of school.

The information sought by the Deputy, in so far as it is available to me, is given in the form of a tabular statement which with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

* N.B. Costs for the various categories of school are met as follows:—

(a) Comprehensive schools: Entirely from State funds.

(b) Secondary schools: Party from State funds and partly from private sources.

(c) Vocational schools: Entirely from public funds—partly from Central Government and partly from the local authorities.

(d) National schools: Mainly from State funds but some expenditure is borne by the school managers.

The costs shown above relate only to expenditure from public funds—no information is available in my Department as to the amount of money from private sources expended by the school managers in the case of National and Secondary schools.
