Vol. 241 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Bay Pollution.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government what precautions are being taken by the local authorities concerned to prevent the waters and beaches of Dublin Bay from becoming dangerously polluted.

17.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether any consultations have been held with Dublin Corporation on the present degree of pollution in Dublin Bay; and whether any change in present sewage disposal methods is contemplated.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 16 and 17 together.

Major drainage works in progress or in planning in the Dublin area continue to be the subject of consultations between my Department and the various sanitary authorities concerned. As I indicated in replies to previous questions these major works are being so designed that they will remedy to a considerable extent any existing pollution problems in the Dublin Bay area.

Do these new plans visualise any departure from the present sewage disposal methods or will the methods continue to be the same?

There will be treatment works at the outfalls.

Is the Minister aware that the city manager recently told a delegation of the Sandymount Residents' Association that these works will not reduce the pollution but will merely maintain it at its present level?

That may be.
