Vol. 241 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lung Cancer Deaths.

4.

asked the Minister for Health the total number of deaths from lung cancer in the years 1964, 1966 and 1968.

The number of deaths from lung cancer in 1964 was 722. In 1966 the number was 856 and 1968 it was 971.

In the light of the increasing rate of cancer and the other complicating factors from cigarette smoking—bronchitis and heart failure —and the evidence which is growing continually and accumulatively, would the Minister not reconsider the attitude of his Department, the dilatory and indefensible attitude, in my view in relation to this matter?

This matter will always be kept under review but as in connection with the fatalities and deaths that occur from a number of other causes an element of voluntary restraint must come into the picture.

Rubbish.
