Vol. 241 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Issue of Medical Cards.

8.

asked the Minister for Health if he will make it publicly known that non-contributory old age pensioners are entitled to a medical card without investigation into their means.

Deputies have been informed of this concession in reply to a number of parliamentary questions during the past year. Under the concession, all health authorities grant medical cards automatically, on application, to aged persons with the full non-contributory pension. The great majority of authorities, including Dublin, do so even where a reduced non-contributory pension is paid.

In order to make these facilities for pensioners more widely known, I intend to include information on them in my Department's booklet on the health services when the next comprehensive revision of the text is undertaken.

I will ask the few outstanding health authorities also to grant the concession to persons with the reduced pension.
