Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Peace Keeping Operations.

160.

asked the Minister for External Affairs the total number of Irish Army officers, NCOs etc. serving abroad on peace keeping operations; and if it is intended to recall any of these units in the near future.

There are a total of 439 Irish Army officers and men at present serving abroad with the United Nations on peace keeping duties, 419 in Cyprus and 20 in the Middle East.

The Security Council mandate for the operation in Cyprus expires on the 15th December next and the question of the maintenance of the Irish contingent for a further period will be considered in the light of whatever decisions the Security Council may take at that time.
